Conference programme now live!

Ahead of the 29th Annual STI-ENID Conference in Bristol, below we reveal the three keynote speakers, and share links to the conference programme.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bristol!

We are pleased to announce that the full programme for the 29th Annual Science and Technology Indicators (STI-ENID) Conference is now available. Taking place at the University of Bristol from 3–5 September 2025, this year’s event centres on the theme “Reconciling research and its measurement”, offering a timely opportunity to reflect on how we assess, value, and support research in a world marked by complexity, crisis, and change.  The theme invites participants to explore how research evaluation can better reflect the diverse purposes, practices and futures of science. What happens when indicators no longer align with the kinds of knowledge we most need? How can measurement support rather than distort? How might evaluation frameworks embrace values like justice, care, sustainability, and community, without sacrificing rigour or comparability?

These questions are addressed not only in the paper sessions, workshops and panels, but also in a compelling series of three keynote talks, each of which approaches the conference theme from a different, critical angle.  For further information of keynote speakers and topics, you can visit www.stienid2025/keynotespeakers

Opening the conference on Wednesday 3rd September, Professor Keri Facer (University of Bristol) will deliver a keynote titled “Measuring what matters: Reimagining research for a shared future.” Drawing on her work at the intersection of education, environmental change and sociotechnical futures, Facer will explore how dominant models of research evaluation can limit our capacity to respond to long-term societal challenges. She will propose a radical rethinking of evaluation systems, grounded in what she calls a “temporal imagination” — a future-oriented, intergenerational approach that prioritises sustainability and shared responsibility.

On Thursday 4th September, Professor Mike Thelwall (University of Sheffield) will deliver the Inaugural Eugene Garfield Memorial Lecture, presented by Clarivate. His keynote, “Reconciling large language model quality scores with citation impact indicators,” engages with the increasing role of AI in research assessment. Drawing on current projects such as AI Peer and LLMs Supporting Grant Peer Review, Thelwall explores whether and how large language models can meaningfully contribute to quality evaluation. His talk speaks directly to the tensions between technological innovation and responsible research governance.

The final keynote, on Friday 5th September, comes from Dr Arianna Becerril (Redalyc, Autonomous University of the State of Mexico), a leading voice in community-led open access. In “Reclaiming the essence of science: Reconciling open infrastructures and initiatives,” she will draw on Latin American experiences to challenge market-driven models of scholarly communication and call for inclusive, publicly owned infrastructures rooted in epistemic justice and knowledge sovereignty.

Together, these keynotes — alongside a full programme of papers, panels and workshops — offer a rich, global conversation on the values and visions that underpin how research is measured. Whether you're interested in AI, open science, bibliometrics, policy, or the future of research systems, STI-ENID 2025 provides a unique space to engage, reflect and act.
